Abstract

The media determine to a great extent our understanding of social problems, including environmental ones. The media are “public arenas” where a struggle among different groups happens around the fact whether a particular situation is a problem to be solved or not. A fact that media give an interpretation of some actor in a conflict situation influences seriously a success of the actor. This article deals with a conflict around a project of a highway from Moscow to St. Petersburg in the local media. What began as a local environmental conflict initiated by Khimki forest defenders have become known far beyond the city of Khimki. The author uses analysis of frames (diagnostic and prognostic) for an investigation of the local newspapers as “public arena” where different actors give their interpretations of the controversial situation.
