Abstract

In 2012 the Council of Young Scientists at the Faculty of Sociology, St. Petersburg State University, organized a set of meetings in the framework of the open interdisciplinary seminar for young scholars “Scientific Environment”. Within the framework of this research seminar, PhD students and social scientists from Russia and Europe who were in the beginning of their careers extensively presented their theoretical and empirical projects devoted to topical scientific problems. Their presentations were followed by an intensive moderated discussion. A particular emphasis was made on the presentations shedding light on edge-cutting theoretical approaches as well as on original research carried out by junior scholars. The paper provides an overview of the presentations given within the seminar and the most heated and productive debates over those.
