Multifaceted Patriotism: from Concept to Research on Youth Representations
Abstract
Based on three studies conducted with the Russian youth of different ages, including high school students and average Russians, the article analyzes the semantic concept of patriotism. The conceptual framework of patriotism is reconstructed through the methodology of grounded theory. The concept of «10 facets of patriotism» is used as the basis of this framework. The research methodology is based on the concept of 10 facets of patriotism, proposed by the expert council on patriotic education at the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Rospatriottsentr”. The author looks at the concept through the empiric approach and examines the embeddedness in youth representations of each topic of this concept: pedagogy, culture, media, family, history, service to the country, sports, ecology, science, volunteering. Based on the analysis of the results of quantitative surveys, focus groups and interviews with young people, the author concludes that there is a need for a broader view of patriotism among young people, not limited solely to military-patriotic topics. The research concludes that the importance of each topic in the views of young people depends to a sufficient extent on age and immersion into the relevant range of issues. The author also proposes to expand the concept of 10 facets of patriotism with such a topic as labour, since it is actually the leitmotif of each of the facets.
