The squatter settlements (“nakhalovki”) of Ulan-Ude: sociocultural adaptation strategies of rural migrants in urban environment
Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of the influence of compact or dispersed settlement on the strategies of socio-cultural adaptation of rural migrants in urban conditions. J. Berry's concept of acculturation strategies is used as a theoretical tool. The weakness of this theory is that it primarily takes into account the discursive level, but pays little attention to the level of practices. Therefore, in our theoretical model we supplemented this concept, based on the ideas of P. Bourdieu, with the analysis of practices. This article is based on the materials of a longitudinal empirical study in Ulan-Ude. Firstly, the strategies of socio-cultural adaptation of rural migrants living in squatter settlements (“nakhalovka”) were considered; secondly, to understand the specifics of socio-cultural adaptation of migrants living compactly in “nakhalovka”, we compared them with the adaptation strategies of rural migrants who settle in the city dispersed. According to the results of the study, we found that rural migrants use a wide range of socio-cultural adaptation strategies. The longitudinal study also showed that strategies can change over time. An important finding of the study was the discovery of declarative adaptation strategies, when rural migrants talk about following one strategy, but at the level of practice use completely different ones. The key difference between migrants living compactly in “nakhalovka” and dispersed throughout the city was revealed in the example of assimilation strategies. The study also showed that the strategy of separation is characteristic not only for residents of squatter settlements, but also for villagers who live outside of migrant areas.
