The Dynamics of Images of Family, Friendship, and Work in the Context of Generational Change Theories (Based on Focus Groups in the Siberian Metropolis)

Abstract

How do the Russians born after 1982, usually referred to as Millenials in generational approaches, see their future families, friends, and professional activities? How and to what extent do their views differ from those of older age cohorts? How do their ideals and patterns of behavior compare with those identified by Western researchers among their foreign peers? This material contains a brief review of the most influential contemporary theoretical approaches to the study of younger generations and the results of comparative analysis of eight focus groups formed from representatives of Soviet and post-Soviet generations in the Siberian metropolis. The research is a combination of quantitative (focus group participants fill out a questionnaire) and qualitative (group interview) methods. The questionnaire consisted of the Big Five test, incomplete sentences, and socio-demographic data from the participants. The topics of «dream job», «true friendship», and «good family» were the focus of the discussion. The data were processed by contrast-case matching methods based on «grounded theory» principles. The results of the study show that with a sufficiently high assessment and importance in their projected future of the institutions and relationships under consideration, young people evaluate them within a different value criteria than representatives of the older generations. Thus «dream job» is least related to sacrifice and duty, friendship requires more understanding and sympathy rather than extreme trials, family — with personal choice rather than social requirements. The results suggest that Russian millennials and subsequent generations, like their Western counterparts, are rather oriented toward a set of non-religious values and the imperatives of self-actualization.
