Urban Environment Values in Discourse of Online Neighbouring Communities
Abstract
The paper presents the analysis of urban environment values constructed by the neighbouring communities on the internet. The development of the “human-environment” system is depicted as process of collective comprehending of the urban environment as the context of life. Neighbouring communities interact with the urban environment and narrative about it in online interaction channels such as pages and groups in social media. This discourse is per se a semantic field which reflects stories of everyday life, the history of the place and interaction between the neighbours as well as distinctive features of the environment. The object of the study is neighbouring online communities of St. Petersburg. The subject of this study is environmental values reflected in the discourse of such communities. The environmental value is considered as those discussed elements of the urban environment that neighbours consider important for themselves. The empirical basis of the study are the discussions in three online neighbouring communities of St. Petersburg, which represent three different types of urban environment –– historical, Soviet and new apartment housing. The methodology of the study is based on the qualitative analysis of the text messages from the neighbouring communities groups and pages in social media. Based on the open coding results, the list of the environmental components was compiled which appear to be significant in the discourse of communities. Based on the axial coding results, specific value modes for conceptualizing significant environmental elements were identified — conflicting, deficient, habitual and unique ones. The main conclusion of the research paper is that different environments where neighbouring communities are operating significantly affect the type and number of environmental elements that are highlighted and discussed by neighbours.
