Abstract. The purpose of the paper is to describe the specifics of modern servicemen professional identity in southern Russian cities. The authors analyze the materials of the sociological survey and in-depth interviews with military from Rostov-on-Don and Novocherkassk (standardized interviewing of 436 military personnel and 16 in-depth interviews). Their perception of social and economic situation, structure of group identity of servicemen, the satisfaction with their professional work is studied.

It is concluded that the ongoing institutional reforms of the army, which in addition to organizational and technological reorganization are aimed at improving the socio-economic status of the military in the society, have a generally positive effect on the professional consciousness of servicemen. Based on the results of the study, we can see a sufficiently high level of corporate professional identity of servicemen from South Russian cities, which implies loyalty to their profession, satisfaction with the results of their work, positive assessment of the prestige of the profession and priority places of professional identity in the overall identification structure. On the other hand, the economic development crisis of the country determines the deterioration of the servicemen's socio-economic well-being in the last 1-2 years. The military personnel of the southern Russian cities estimate the quality of their leisure time as sufficiently low, while respondents from towns consider that their housing is of poor quality. The proximity to the military conflict area affects sergeants' and rank-and-file personnel desire to perform military service in another territory.
