Abstract

The paper is focused on the role of the body and the body practices in construction of social conception of woman, and on the issue of distinction between the body, sex and gender. The analysis of critique of identifying sex with the body as well as binary classification of sexes is provided. Classical “doing gender” theory of C. West and D. Zimmerman is reformulated with taking the body into account. Conclusion is made on significance of distinguishing the body, sex as the result of binary classification, and gender as behavioural p rescription according to sex. Such account can be evaluated as a theoretical resource for interpreting bodily practices as means of inscribing gender on the body in contemporary social condition of gender tensions.
