Abstract. The article examines the formation of urban identity. Within the framework of constructivism and interdisciplinary approach the author argues that urban identity is a symbolic resource of the city. Therefore, the knowledge about the mechanism of its formation is essential for the local elites. The symbolic resource of urban identity consists in its potential to become a social and cultural basis for constructing the urban environment. On the basis of a positive and sustainable identity an attractive urban image could be created. This image contributes to a favorable climate inside the city preparing the conditions for the realization of creative potential of its citizens, preventing the outflow of young and talented residents, and attracting the target audiences. However, the symbolic connections between the city and its residents should be supported.

On the one hand, the author emphasizes the factors that influence the formation of urban identity. She describes some approaches to the study of urban identity formation and presents a classification of the factors influencing this process, depending on factor stability and characteristics of urban meaning production. On the other hand, the author shows the significance of institutions as the key elements in the process of urban identity formation. The institutional aspect of urban identity formation deals with the various tools and strategies, particularly with events and projects.

Keywords: urban identity, institutions of identity formation, strategies of identity formation
